Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who can sit exams at Wiltshire Exam Centre? +
Anyone entering as a private (external) candidate: home-educated students, students at schools that don't offer a particular subject, adults returning to study, and candidates resitting to improve a grade. There is no upper age limit.
When do I need to enter? +
Standard entry deadlines for the summer series usually fall in mid-February, with the exam boards charging late fees after that. We recommend enquiring the autumn before you plan to sit, so there's time to confirm specifications and any access arrangements.
What about coursework, NEA and science practicals? +
Many private candidates choose specifications designed to be assessed by written exam only. Where a subject includes non-exam assessment or endorsements (such as GCSE English spoken language), we'll advise on what's possible at the centre and which specification best suits your situation before you enter.
Can I have extra time or other access arrangements? +
Yes, where JCQ criteria are met. Access arrangements such as extra time, rest breaks or a reader must be applied for in advance with appropriate evidence — tell us your requirements when you enquire and we'll explain exactly what's needed.
How do I get my results and certificates? +
Results are issued to you directly on the official results days in August (or the relevant series date). Certificates arrive from the exam boards in the autumn and can be collected or posted securely.
Where is the centre? +
We're based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, with straightforward access from across the county and neighbouring areas. Full venue details and directions are provided with your exam confirmation.
